“He won every single bout he fenced and stayed strong, calm and focused through both Y10 and Y12. I really believe that his sessions with you put him in the right frame of mind to address the nerves and anxiety he admitted he felt — so thank you for making an impact!”

—Happy Parent

“I reached out to Corwin to work with my son who was struggling with performing at his potential. His coaching sessions provided my son with a new found confidence and techniques that he was able to incorporate into his bouts immediately. The skills and techniques Corwin teaches extend beyond the fencing strip. Corwin is patient and genuine in his desire to help fencers achieve their best results. My son looked forward to his weekly coaching with Corwin. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Corwin and highly recommend him!”

—Christina D., Happy Parent, Cadet Men’s Foil

Corwin, your system works . . . It was a 7-1 deficit and the only way to come back was to use your techniques that you taught me”

— Philippe Bennett, Veteran World Team Member

“[The sessions] are helping me try to qualify for the Olympics”

-Kat Holmes, 2-time Olympian and World Champion

“I just wanted to let you know that whatever topics and techniques you went over during the workshop, they worked! My son went to two tournaments after your workshop, he was able to pass the first DE bouts which was a big improvement. One of the DEs, he only got 5 points during halftime, and was able to win the bout in the end 15 vs 13.”

–Violet T., happy parent

“I don’t see competitions as a chore anymore, or something like . . . there’s not so much of a negative thing tied to it anymore; it’s like ‘I can go fence, I can try things out’ . . . it’s not as tense anymore, not as filled with pressure. And even if it does get stressful I’ve got these skills you taught me . . . the box breathing is my go-to, I’ve been using that a lot.

Since we achieved the goals we set out for me, I think that I am ready to take the next steps on my own. I just want you to know that I am so grateful for everything you have taught me and helped me with, it is not only helping me with fencing, but with my whole life too. Having someone to talk to who understood where I was coming from was a huge blessing, and always made me feel lighter.”

—S.R., High School Fencer, Women’s Saber

“Corwin’s mental training program has helped me begin to realize my full potential on the fencing strip.”

—Liam Carpenter, Men’s Epee, NYU Fencing Team

After countless hours of training, days spent in preparations, and the stress of travel, it’s heartbreaking to leave a competition frustrated with your performance—and even worse when it happens again and again, forming a pattern that you can’t seem to break no matter how hard you try.

I had that issue for years — despite being passionate, training hard, and getting some great results, I would often lose to weaker fencers.

After years of training, dedicated work, and a LOT of trial and error, I was able to turn things around to become 3-time national champion and 2-time world team member. Despite that success, I still found myself hitting a wall and unable to progress. I knew mental training was important, and decided to focus on that. Despite my best efforts, though, I couldn’t find any resources to tell me how to improve my mental game.

I entered a ‘cycle of frustration’: going into competitions with low confidence, losing to weaker fencers, and leaving disappointed.

Fortunately, that's not the end of the story—in the past few years I’ve returned to the piste and matched my best results from the past, qualifying once again for the US National Team and competing in World Cups at the Senior level.

A big part of that comeback was learning mental training techniques that helped me on (and off) the strip.

I don’t want any more fencers to face the cycle of frustration I was in, or lose their joy in the sport.

This is why I

do what I do:

Coach fellow fencers with clear and actionable mental training techniques that not only get results, but boost confidence and love for the sport.

Mental Skills Coaching is focused on developing neuroscience-based practical skills you can use in the real world.

Some examples include:

  • Mindfulness — For focus and emotional regulation

  • Visualization — Scientifically shown to improve confidence

  • Breathing Techniques — To manage emotions and focus

  • Competition Day Planning — How to structure your time so you stay in the zone

You can figure this out on your own, through trial and error — but it will take years and cost you tens of thousands of dollars in flights, hotels, tournament entry fees, etc.

By proactively exploring what approach works best for you, you are saving yourself immeasurable frustration and the pain of bouts you lost when you didn’t need to.

I invited Corwin to the club because when I went to coach at the Olympics it was clear that the mental game was a big factor for everyone there. He taught several mental techniques and helped fencers practice them during bouts.

His program is good, and I would recommend it to other coaches and fencers.
— Andrey Geva, US Olympic Coach, Women's Epee
SharperMind Training gave me a cohesive mental model to put together all the disparate nuggets of knowledge I have about mindfulness and mental training. Many months later and I still practice the mental routine that Corwin emphasized.

I firmly believe that any SharperMind training is a boon to whoever participates regardless of experience level.

How does coaching work?

Mental Skills Coaching, like any kind of skill development, takes time, dedication, and practice. Coaching takes place in weekly sessions (typically 50 minutes) and follows a 24-week structure with three distinct periods:

  • The first 8 weeks starts with exploring what’s challenging for you and your goals in mental training, followed by basic skill development. During this time we will focus on a few core skills, personalized to your current challenges and goals for the future.

  • The second 8 weeks is dedicated to taking the skills you’ve learned in the first part and putting them together into a coherent mental training program. This will involve some experimentation to see what works best, and ongoing discussions in coaching sessions.

  • The third 8-week period is continuing to practice the skills you’ve developed, refining them further until they become second nature. I believe this period is especially important because these skills, like any others you may learn, take time and practice to develop.

Throughout this time we will be discussing any competitions you have and using them as opportunities to put your new mental skills into practice. This discussion will also help us both understand the nature of your challenges in competitions more fully, letting us go further into addressing whatever those challenges may be.

  • Please note my cancellation policy: any session canceled or rescheduled within 24 hours of the scheduled time is considered a no-show and counts against the package total. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

Not sure if mental skills coaching is right for you?

Here are some of the challenges my clients face prior to working with me:

  • Panic attacks during competitions

  • Losing to weaker fencers

  • Inconsistent performance; fencing worse in competitions than at practice

  • Feeling frustrated and discouraged with fencing, like they can’t improve

  • Feeling frozen, helpless, or ‘stuck’ while fencing

  • My program is 24 weeks long because, like any other new set of skills, mental training takes time to get good at. This gives you time to learn the basic skills (8 weeks), practice them so they are available when you need them (8 weeks), and continue to refine them until they become second nature (8 weeks).

  • I also offer starting packages of 8 weeks and individual sessions. I find the 8-week package gives most people the clarity they need to continue into the full 24 sessions.

If you’re not sure if it will be a good fit, I totally understand. I do offer a guarantee that if you don’t want to continue for any reason after the first session, I’ll refund you 100% for the full package.

If you’d like to start with just one standalone session, you can do that as well. Individual sessions are $300. Fill out the interest form if you want to be contacted when client spots open up.

  • This is quite common. If you start with the 8-week package, we’ll go through the first 8-week section of the full program.

Then when we continue into the 24-week package we will pick right up.

You are welcome to apply your payment for the 8-week package to the 24-week package, and only pay the difference.

  • Sessions are 50 minutes, typically once per week.

If you prefer shorter, I’m also happy to meet for 25-minute sessions. This is a good option for younger fencers who focus best for short periods, or those with busy schedules.

  • We will typically meet once a week.

If there’s a period of time when you’re not able to meet, we can arrange to skip certain weeks and start back up after, for example if you have a vacation planned, or a training camp.

  • Yes! Pretty much all my 1-1 coaching is over zoom.

The exception is if you find me at an event, like Summer Nationals, or a camp where I’m offering sessions.

  • I have! My clients range from Y10 to Veteran fencers, and in addition to mental skills coaching I’ve taught at after school programs for 15+ years, ranging from preschool to high school.

  • I meet with clients Mondays and Thursdays 1-6pm Eastern Time, and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 1-8pm Eastern Time.

  • Panic attacks or other kinds of anxiety under pressure are unfortunately very common for athletes, and one of the main things I help with.

  • Absolutely! Managing the stress of competitions and developing a way to perform consistently is central to what I teach.

  • Yes, if my coaching seems like a good fit but presents a financial hardship for you, please fill out the interest form and let me know in the form that you’d like to discuss a scholarship.

  • I draw from my experience coaching, my own research on mental training, and most importantly my insights as an elite athlete myself.

Like any athletic coach who passes on the skills they developed over many years, my goal is to share the skills I’ve learned with others.
